Man, people are really acting like this rocket killed their parents, and Katy Perry sang a song while it happened. This is a story about something that doesn't matter on any level, the people involved don't matter, the technology doesn't matter.

And yet it's fascinated people on social media for a solid couple of days now. I don't get it.

Performative wealth acting as though it is promoting scientific achievement while funding bodies are being cut to ribbons is gruesome.

    It's another show of excess.

And when they return to talk about the majesty of the planet, it's disingenuous.

Space tourism offers humanity nothing (but pollution) at this point in time.

I'm not in favor of it either, but this is hardly the first flight of this exact type. It's also a trivial waste in the face of far more egregious and systemic ones, so I'm left feeling like this is the usual left-leaning autophagia and distraction from the grim news.

Besides, we have whole industries that offer humanity nothing and waste far more resources, and people routinely give it a pass. Hell, quite a few people here work in those industries, yes I'm looking at you ad tech guys.

So adding Just One More is OK?

It isn't like this is a Bezos One Time Flight.

Having priorities is not an act of hypocrisy, this is not "just one more" it's not even a drop in the ocean. It's just a PR stunt that annoyed some people, or perhaps more accurately, was used to generate engagement. It isn't a significant environmental issue, and never will be, because it's a failure that's kept limping along by one billionaire's personal wealth.

Sometimes it's not about the straw but about the camel's neck, you know, the one thing that was too much. Sometimes the crowd's the one who decides about the next song on the playlist, not the DJ, and it could have been literally any old song.

I have two recommendations for those who brush this (rightly) aside who don't get the room-reading part:

Especially the second one (by Angela Collier) is totally worth watching for several reasons apart from the subject at hand.

Hey, you edited the title, again. Original Title:

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin flop is bigger than Katy Perry: Projectile dysfunction.

/s

Ms Lopatto is not shy with words:

I think, at this point, we can all agree the Commercial Crew Program was an important failure point for American democracy, propping up Musk’s SpaceX for so long that Musk could steal Americans’ most sensitive data, wreak havoc on Social Security, and use X, formerly known as Twitter, to recruit an unknown number of baby mamas.

Like, not shy, at all:

And on top of that, the reason Sánchez was aboard the Blue Origin flight is that she’s literally fucking the boss. What a breakthrough for feminism — am I right, girls?
